Part A

Write a short expository essay (about 120 words) to explain the main points of the following piece of information.

First aid is emergency treatment for illness or injury while waiting for medical help. At one time or another almost everyone is called upon to render first aid. Unless she or he has taken a course on the subject, there is usually confusion and doubt as to what should be done. In most cases it is better for the person untrained in first aid to do too little than too much. If it is not possible to reach a doctor, police or firemen are better equipped to give first aid than are the uninitiated.

It is advisable for at least one member of the family to take a FIRST AID course, and it is a necessity for each household to have a good emergency medical manual and a first-aid kit. Always keep in mind that first aid does not replace the doctor but merely attempts to keep the victim alive and in the best condition possible until medical aid arrives.

听力原文:  The Olympic Games have always included a number of ceremonies, many of which emphasize the themes of international friendship and peaceful cooperation. The opening ceremony has always included the parade of nations.

The Greek team always enters first, and the host team enters last. The torch relay, in which the Olympic Flame symbolizes the transmission of Olympic ideals from ancient Greece to the modem world, was introduced as part of the opening ceremony at the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin.

Two other important ceremonial innovations had appeared earlier at the 1920 Games in Antwerp, Belgium. The Olympic Flag was flown for the first time. Another was the first reciting of the Olympic Oath, taken in the name of all the athletes by a member of the host's team. The oath asserts the athletes' commitment to the ideals of sportsmanship in competition.

Originally there was another parade of nations during the closing ceremonies of the Games. At the end of the 1956 Summer Games in Melbourne Australia however the athletes broke ranks and mingled together to celebrate the occasion. This custom was continued in subsequent Games. After the athletes join in the main Olympic stadium in celebration, the president of the IOC invites the athletes and spectators to meet again at the site of the next Games. The IOC president then declares the Games ended, and the Olympic Flame is extinguished.

Most of the Olympics ceremonies are to

A.emphasize the justice and peace

B.promote the international friendship and peaceful cooperation

C.promote the ideals of sportsmanship in competition

D.insist on the mutual understanding and international aid

Part B (10 points)

You are going to read a list of headings and a text about the problem of staff recruitment of most companies. Choose a heading from the list A—F that best fits the meaning of each numbered part of the text (41—45). The first and last paragraphs of the text are not numbered. There are one extra heading that you do not need to use. (10 points)

The difficulty of holding onto good, experienced staff has always been a major issue with the majority of companies. High staff turnover can result in many problems. One of the most serious of these is the cost of continually having to find and train replacements.

(41)______.

Most companies hope to recruit the right type of person in the first place. However, too much emphasis on qualifications and not enough on personality often leads to a company attracting the right standard. but not the right kind, of person. Selection tests can be used to indicate a candidate's suitability for the job they are applying for. They can also be used to identify existing staff who are suitable but who, initially, may not have been considered.

(42)______.

It is important for companies to understand why employees move on to another employer. The reasons for staff resigning and the benefits offered by their new employer must be recorded. They can be the key to identifying any problem areas that might exist within an organization. It is essential, therefore, that employees who are about to disappear are interviewed before they depart, in order to discover why they are leaving.

(43)______.

Analysis of these interviews has shown that a lack of appreciation is one of the main factors causing employees to look elsewhere for work. Managers should provide regular feedback to their staff. For example, when good work has been done it must be praised. If this is not done, employees will think their efforts are not appreciated.

(44)______.

Communications within the organization are another consideration. If these are poor, employees will feel left out. This can be avoided through regular departmental and inter-departmental meetings, which are extremely valuable as means of passing on information throughout the company and keeping employees up to date with recent developments. They also serve to provide the opportunity for employees to express their opinions.

(45)______.

Paying staff according to how they perform. is another way of recognizing employee's efforts. If the company benefits from an employee's extra efforts, it is only reasonable that the employee should also receive some financial benefit. It is, however, important to avoid offering some member of staff the opportunity to improve their pay while excluding others. The reasons for staff resigning and the benefits offered by their new employer must be recorded.

In cases where such difficulties might exist, a planned career progression for an individual staff member means that the person knows exactly what to expect from the job and what is required from them

A. appreciation as the main factor

B. selection tests help in recruitment

C. praise the men who act well

D. to know why employees leave

E. reasonable reward and fair treatment

F. exchanges inside the company

A market is commonly thought of as a place where commodities are bought and sold. Thus fruit and vegetables are sold wholesale at Covent Garden Market and meat is sold wholesale at Smithfield Market. But there are markets for things 【21】______ commodities, in the usual sense. There are 【22】______ estate markets, foreign exchange markets, labor markets, short-term capital markets, and so on; there may be a market for anything which has a price. And there may be no particular place 【23】______ dealings are confined. Buyers and sellers may be 【24】______ over the whole world and instead of actually meeting together in a market-place they may deal with one another 【25】______ telephone, telegram, cable or letter. 【26】______ dealings are 【27】______ to a particular place, the dealers may consist wholly or in part of agents 【28】______ instructions from clients far away. Thus agents buy meat at Smithfield 【29】______ retail butchers all over England; and 【30】______ on the London Stock Exchange buy and sell 【31】______ on instructions from clients all over the world. We must therefore define a market 【32】______ any area over which buyers and sellers are 【33】______ such close touch with one another, either directly or 【34】______ dealers, that the prices 【35】______ in one part of the market affect the prices paid in other parts.

Modem means of communication are so rapid that a buyer can discover 【36】______ asking, and can accept it if he wishes, 【37】______ he may be thousands of miles away. Thus the market for anything is 【38】______ . the whole world. But in fact things have, normally, only a local or national market.

This may be because nearly the whole demand is concentrated 【39】______ one locality. These special local demands, 【40】______ , are of quite minor importance. The main reason why many things do not have a world market is that they are costly or difficult to transport.

Task 2

Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 through 45.

All of us communicate with one another nonverbally (不使用言语地), as well as with words. Most of the time, we are not aware that we are doing it. We gesture with eyebrows or a hand, meet someone else"s eyes and look away, change positions in a chair. These actions we assume are occasional. However in recent years researchers have discovered that there" is a system to them almost as consistent (一致的) and understandable as language.

One important kind of body language is eye behavior. Americans are Careful about how and when they meet one another"s eyes. In our normal conversation, each eye contact lasts only about a second before one or both of us look away. When two Americans look searchingly into each other"s eyes, they become more intimate. Therefore, we carefully avoid this, except in suitable situations.

Researchers who are engaged in the study of communication through body movement are not prepared to spell out a precise vocabulary of gestures. When an American rubs his nose, it may mean he is disagreeing with someone or refusing something. But there are other possible explanations, too. Another example: when a student in conversation with a professor holds the older man"s eyes a little longer than usual, it can be a sign of respect; it can be a challenge to the professor"s authority; it can be something else entirely. The researchers look for patterns in the situation, not for a separate meaningful gesture.

Communication between human beings would be just dull if it were all done with words.

The main idea of this article is that   .

A.study of communication through body movement is a new science

B.body movements are as important as words in communication

C.all of us communicate with one another

D.eye behavior. is the most important part in body language
